Hockey Programs

ELITE Off Season Hockey Strength Training

At Propel our off-season conditioning programs are designed to develop athletes, and in doing so, build a well-balanced, athletically “gifted” injury free hockey player. Our Off-Season Hockey Strength and Conditioning Programs are not weightlifting, powerlifting, or bodybuilding! It is a planned and methodical means of training designed for the needs of today’s hockey player, SPEED, POWER, and AGILITY in order to move and keep up to a stronger and faster game.

Our Objective:

Our objective is to increase movement quality, coordination, symmetry, strength, power and agility. This is an important foundation to build in order to decrease injury and maximize their sport performance level in both the short and long term.

Our approach will help lower the risk for overuse injuries that are becoming shockingly prevalent in young players now. The increase in these types of injuries comes from an early emphasis on sport specific skills which over trains a narrow scope of specific movements patterns and very likely provides too little stimulus for some major muscle groups and too much stress on smaller muscles.

Strength training provides the foundation for dramatic gains in Muscular Strength. This foundation then lends itself to more dramatic development of skill related fitness components including power, speed, balance, coordination, agility, and reaction time.

Program Step-by-Step Goals:

  • Improve Range of Motion necessary for increasing movement quality and coordination.
  • Increase Static and Dynamic Mobility and Stability
  • Increase Dynamic Strength and Power
  • Increase Rate of Force Development (power – the critical component of speed) through properly progressed power and plyometric training.
  • Increase metabolic conditioning or duration in which the player can perform a high level of work.

    PROGRAM INCLUDES:

  • Players will complete pre, mid and post movement and performance assessments. Assessment reports with summaries will be provided to the players.
  • Four 90 minute Coached Training Sessions Per Week

Off Season Strength and Conditioning Training for Young Hockey Players (Atom/PeeWee)

At Propel our off-season conditioning programs are designed to develop athletes, and in doing so will build a balanced, athletically “gifted” injury free hockey player. Our Hockey Athletic Training Programs are not weightlifting, powerlifting, or bodybuilding! It is a planned and structured means of exercising with appropriate resistance that progresses as the musculoskeletal system becomes stronger. Under knowledgeable guidance kids can safely use free weights, elastic bands, medicine balls, or body weight alone, all within their strength training program.

The American Academy of Pediatrics, the ACSM, ACE, the British Association for Sport and Exercise Science, CSEP, the National Association for Sport and Physical Education and the NSCA, International Federation of Sports Medicine, and NCAA all have put forth research that unequivocally shows that strength exercise is safe, and effective, in youth so long as appropriate methodologies are utilized.

When we think of building athletes at Propel our training approach is directed towards their long term athletic development, LTAD, where a very wholistic view point must guide their training programs. We know that the best time to build bone is in the preteen and teen years. Kids who do regular resistance exercise increase Bone Mineral Density several times faster than those kids who do not participate in strength training programs.

Strength training in childhood may provide the foundation for dramatic gains in Muscular  Strength during adulthood. This foundation then lends itself to more dramatic development of skill related fitness components including power, speed, balance, coordination, agility, and reaction time. However, they are not just strength training for benefits in adulthood. Despite low levels of testosterone, boys and girls can typically increase strength by 30-50% in only 2 months of progressive strength training.

At a time when youth are beginning to specialize in their sports at much younger ages, we feel it is part of our role to create the balance in their athletic development.

Our approach at Propel will help ensure there is optimization or movement and coordination with balanced muscle development. This will lower the risk for overuse injuries which are becoming shockingly prevalent at very young ages now. The increase in these types of injuries comes from an early emphasis on sport specific skills which over trains a narrow scope of specific movements patterns and very likely provides too little stimulus for some major muscle groups and too much stress on smaller muscles.

We take our young athlete training very seriously and therefore base our training philosophy on the following principles:

  1. Avoid and prevent injury at all costs
  2. Develop quality movement through all components of training, including agility and mobility, strength, & power
  3. Provide appropriate training for all youth tailored to their chronological and developmental age (kids respond better to certain kinds of training
  4. Teach the fundamentals of strength and conditioning to everyone who enters our facility so that healthy lifelong behaviors can be engrained at an early age!
  5. Make training fun!! Kids will work extremely hard when they understand the goal and why it is important for them especially if it is structured in a challenging but enjoyable way
